I shuffled my weight from foot to foot, nervously wringing my hands behind my
back. I didn't want anyone to see how much my palms were sweating. I had on my
clean black slacks, a white dress shirt, and my only pair of shoes. Scrumpled up
in my left hand was a colorful silk tie that I had gotten as a hand-me-down from
my father.
I was 19 years old, failing university, and standing in the hall wall of a
posh hotel early one Saturday morning in 1988. It was my very first Supervisor
School at my brand new MLM business. And I had no idea how to tie a tie....
Finally I spied the lady who I had been patiently waiting for. It was my
sponsor! I grinned and waved. She rolled up to me with a "whoosh!".
She always was in high gear, her ever-present throng of downline around her. She
was extremely successful. In 1987 she was the #2 earner in the country in our
company! Maybe she could help me tie my tie....
I looked down at the tips of my shoes, a little embarrassed to ask her. I
finally opened the palm of my left had at shoulder height. The tie dropped down
thanks to gravity like a little magicians trick. "Tada!" I sheepishly
croaked. "Do you know how to tie a tie?"
She grinned, and walked around behind me. She was married, and in her late
thirties. I was 19 and incredibly shy. The eyes of a dozen downline staring at
us didn't help. She took my hands and together she taught me how to do it. Three
or four practice sessions and then she dropped her hands. She had me tie that
knot and straight on the very first try. I blushed and grinned a huge
"Thanks!". She could see my relief. I wanted to look good for the big
event!

I have only tried to build 4 legitimate downlines in 17 years. The first,
when I was 19, I was personally mentored by the #2 earner in the country in that
company. I was too young, and flaked out after 6 months, too early to see the
results of my personal growth. The second, when I was 22, I was personally
sponsored by a top pin in that company, who was 21 years old himself. I
experienced incredible personal growth during that year, but wrong timing and a
lack of food knocked me out of the business. In 1994 I was 5th level to a top
producer in a new company. I eventually worked one-on-one with him for years as
he became the #1 earner and I became the #6 earner in that company. I still own
that business a decade later. In my fourth and final effort I came out of
retirement, sponsored personally by the owner of a new MLM. I built a team of
7000 in 8 months.
