Getting your Web Site Bookmarked by Larry M. Jaynes
I've often seen that repetition is the key to success in communication.
Certainly, we need to repeat our information to people if we want them to
remember our message. It is also important to repeat the important elements in a
sales message if we want to bring our customers to an informed decision when
purchasing a product.
It's the same with a web site -- many of the most successful web sites are
the ones that build up a clientele of repeat visitors. Repetition is especially
important if our site is offering something that might take a lot of
consideration, or if it depends on donations to stay online.
In these cases, getting our potential customers / donors to bookmark our page
is a good way of ensuring the kind of repetition we desire. However, getting
bookmarked isn't as easy as it seems. Sure, some people add every web page they
come to as one of their "favorites," but most people will only
bookmark a site that has proven that it has "revisit" value.
One of the best ways to get a site bookmarked is to have timely information
that gets updated regularly. When we update our information on a weekly, or if
possible, daily basis, there's a good chance that our audience will fit this
kind of web site into their Internet "schedule." I know that I will
often visit a site once a day, or once a week like clockwork if I know that it
will have new, useful information each time I visit.
A key here is to make sure that the site's information is both USEFUL and
REGULAR. You want to provide information that your potential clients actually
need, whether it is financial, practical, or even spiritual. In other words, you
want to have a quality web site. You also want to be as regular as possible when
you update your information -- if you can update at the same time each week (or
day), you are much more likely to have customers come back to your site time
after time as they become accustomed to discovering what is new.
So, to repeat myself, repetition is a key to successful communication. With a
web site, this means having repeat visitors, NOT just repeating your
information. Remember, the more times someone comes to your web site, the more
times there will be a chance that they will help support it! Being innovative in
your presentation is showmanship - people enjoy a good show, and this keeps them
coming back for more!
